Why You Should Skip Lido Paris and Watch Moulin Rouge Instead

Watching a cabaret show in Paris is such a spectacle that I can’t believe it’s taken this long for people to catch up on. Savvy travelers like you and me now know that we can travel and enjoy a slice of hedonistic Paris that still survives in the City of Lights. It is one of those pleasures that I wish no one misses when they travel to Paris.

With that said, there is often some confusion over which cabaret show to watch and the choice eventually boils to either Moulin Rouge or Lido. The oldest cabaret Paradis Latin and the upstart Crazy Horse are often get the short shrift in the process. If you have enough time and money, then I suggest you visit both the Moulin Rouge and the Lido like I did. If you must pick just one, then my wholehearted suggestion is to experience the Moulin Rouge. Here’s why.

More Authentic

While Moulin Rouge is not the oldest cabaret show, it is one of the most enduring. The makers have paid careful attention to detail and the performances more than justify the high-ticket prices. The fact that it was turned into a Hollywood property by Baz Luhrmann in no way takes away from the authenticity of the Can Can routine that has been a part of Moulin Rouge over the decades. The Lido, on the other hand, is more stage-managed and lacks enough wow moments to rival Moulin Rouge. The inherent charm of a cabaret is also missing at Lido that makes it hard to recommend.

More Popular

Lido’s entrance foyer had images of Deepika Padukone and other stars to attract visitors, clearly showcasing the target audience the establishment is hoping to lure. You have to be very rich or very early if you are looking for Moulin Rouge tickets though. The show quickly fills up and its popularity can be gauged from the fact that its trademark windmill is often referred to as the symbol of Montmartre district where it is located.

More Variety

Some other blogs will suggest you choose Lido over Moulin Rouge but their bias is probably driven by the seating tables and food that is slightly better at Lido. At a cabaret show though, the focus must be on the different dances and artistes rather than where you are seated or are served. And the fact remains that when it comes down to it, Moulin Rouge offers superior value through its varied acts.

More Wow Factor

Somehow, there is no escaping the feeling that Lido is a touristic trap with its OTT glamour girls, mechanically choreographed sequences and the overall vibe it gives out. Moulin Rouge, even at full capacity, knows how to put on a good show. The woman who fearlessly jumps into a pool full of water snakes, the couple who made acrobatics look like child’s play and the costumed dancers who gave it their all, the Can Can was an experience unlike anything at Lido. It’s a secure place with everything moving like clockwork to give you the best cabaret experience you’re going to watch in Paris. So really, why wouldn’t you go to Moulin Rouge?

5 Practical Ways To Enjoy The Feerie At Moulin Rouge

  • Book your tickets in advance from the website.
  • Book your transport to and fro from your hotel. This is important as you can keep valuables like phones in your bus as they are not allowed inside the hall. You can also book your tickets from some transport companies for sold-out shows.
  • Be on time and get in line as quickly as possible. If you are with a group, stay with them at all times even though the temptation of getting clicked outside the venue with the famous red windmill is strong. This is the only way to ensure you get good seats.
  • If you don’t mind much for it, take the 11 PM show that is generally 40 percent cheaper than the 9 PM show. Skip the 7 PM show that also includes dinner that is average at best.
  • Buy a souvenir from the place. It’s one of the few touristy places that many people don’t visit and makes for a great conversation starter.
